MAHNMAL DESTEL

At the beginning of the 1930s, a brickworks was planned in Destel. However, with the outbreak of the Second World War, the building materials were confiscated. Thanks to the commitment of some local war veterans of the Second World War, the plan for a memorial to fallen comrades came to the fore again at the end of the 1950s. In 1958, a boulder (3.40 m x 2 m x 0.7 m) was discovered during land consolidation work on the Weser in Ilvese. Due to the size and location of the object, the stone was originally intended to be blown up.

The Destel citizen Wilhelm Knost, who worked for the land consolidation authority at the time, prevented the blasting and secured the stone for the local project in his home village. The stone was transported to Destel with a Unimog and low-loader from the Weitkamp company and erected by a unit of Minden pioneers in 1962. The subsequent engraving of the stones and the production of the name stele was carried out by the sculptor Brune from Lübbeck. After the construction of the "new school building" and its opening in 1960, the memorial, originally planned as a memorial, was inaugurated in January 1963.

Every year on Remembrance Day, a memorial service is held at the Destel memorial to commemorate the effects of the two world wars. In 2018, the memorial was lovingly restored by some members of the Desteler Runde.
