ALTE RÄUCHEREI "KLOPPENBURG"

The Kloppenburg family lived in Destel/ Twiehausen even before the end of the Thirty Years' War. The existing two-storey longitudinal timber-framed building, designed as a residential and farmhouse, stands on a natural stone base and was built in 1817 by Carl Wilhelm Kloppenburg and Anna Maria Elisabeth Schwettmann in the neighborhood of the bride's parents. The farmstead includes a two-aisled half-timbered building (coach house) built in 1830 as an old man's quarters, with vaults on both sides, and a detached slaughterhouse next to the gate.

The family's main occupation was farming. In addition to this, domestic butchery developed into a flourishing business in the 19th century. The animals were cut up and boned in the slaughterhouse. The meat could then be stored in the cellar in a cool place. After processing, the meat products were smoked in the tower and then hung on long rods in the attic. The sausage products produced and processed on the farm were shipped nationwide. This additional income enabled the family to lead a more middle-class lifestyle at the end of the 19th century. The children's education was supervised by a tutor.

With increasing prosperity, the building was extended by two further brick extensions. The northern extension comprised the stables, while the southern part of the building was extended to include a two-storey living area. In addition, a three-storey smokehouse tower was added to the eastern eaves side of the residential part in brick construction around 1900. The building was also extended on the east side at this time to include a sunken cellar room with a servants' chamber above. The smokehouse tower, shed, slaughterhouse and the longitudinal plank building are now listed buildings.
